Secondary frequency - The radiotelephony frequency assigned to an aircraft as a second choice for air-ground communication in a radiotelephony network.
Secondary surveillance radar – SSR - is a radar system used in air traffic control (ATC), that not only detects and measures the position of aircraft i.e. range and bearing, but also requests additional information from the aircraft itself such as its identity and altitude.
Selective call system - selcal - a signaling method which can alert an individual aircraft that a ground station wishes to communicate with it.
Semi circular altitude/flight level -
Sidestep manoeuvre - A visual maneuver accomplished by a pilot at the completion of an instrument approach to permit a straight-in landing on a parallel runway not more than 1,200 feet to eitherside of the runway to which the instrument approach was conducted
SIMPLEX
Simplex communication - refers to communication that occurs in one direction only.
A method in which telecommunication between two stations takes place in one direction at a time one-way communication without capability to speak and listen at the same time
לדוגמא: מכשיר קשר. בעת שידור לא שומע ובעת קליטה לא משדר
A duplex communication system - is a system composed of two connected parties or devices that can communicate with one another in both direction
Simultaneous parallel approaches -
Mode 1 - independent parallel approaches: simultaneous approaches to parallel instrument runways where radar separation minima are not prescribed between aircraft using adjacent ILS; and
Mode 2 - dependent parallel approaches: simultaneous approaches to parallel instrument runways where radar separation minima between aircraft using adjacent ILS are prescribed.
Simultaneous parallel departures -
independent parallel departures: simultaneous departures for aircraft departing in the same direction from parallel runways.
It should be noted that when the spacing between two parallel runways is lower than the specified value determined by wake turbulence considerations, the runways are considered as a single runway with regard to vortex wake separation.
Standard instrument arrival - STAR - A preplanned instrument flight rule (IFR) air traffic control arrival procedure published for pilot use in graphiand/or textual form. STARs provide transition from the en route structure to an outer fix or an instrument approach fix/arrival waypoint in the terminal area
Standard instrument departure - SID - A preplanned instrument flight rule (IFR) air traffic control (ATC) departure procedure printed for pilot/controller use in graphic form to provide obstacle clearance and a transition from the terminal area to the appropriate en route structure.
SIDs are primarily designed for system enhancement to expedite traffic flow and to reduce pilot/controller workload.
Straight in landing - A landing made on a runway aligned within 30˚ of the final approach course following completion of an instrument approach
Stopway - An area beyond the takeoff runway no less wide than the runway and centered upon the extended centerline of the runway
able to support the airplane during an aborted takeoff, without causing structural damage to the airplane, and designated by the airport authorities for use in decelerating the airplane during an aborted takeoff
Squelch – a control on the receiver that reducs the noise Operation of the sqelch control to reduce noise can reduce the sensitivity of the incoming signal
Squawk code, (more formally transponder code) a four-digit number sent out by an aircraft\'s transponder
