This message category shall comprise those messages sent by mobile stations reporting that they are threatened by grave and imminent danger and all other messages relative to the immediate assistance required by the mobile station in distress.

An Emergency
An emergency can be either Distress condition or an Urgency condition. Either the pilot or the controller can declare an emergency
A pilot who encounters a Distress condition may declare emergency by beginning the initial communication with the word "mayday"' repeated
three times. For an Urgency' the word "Panpan" should be used in the same manner

Imposition of silence
The station in distress, or the station in controlof distress traffic, shall be permitted to impose silence, eitheron all stations of the mobile service in the area or on any station which interferes with the distress traffic. It shall address these instructions “to all stations”, or to one station only, according to circumstances. In either case, it shall use STOP TRANSMITTING and the radiotelephony distress signal MAYDAY

Termination of distress communications and of silence
When an aircraft is no longer in distress, it shall transmit a message cancelling the distress condition
When the station which has controlled the distress communication traffic becomes aware that the distress condition is ended, it shall take immediate action to
ensure that this information is made available, as soon as possible, to the ATS unit concerned the aircraft operating agency concerned, or its representativein
accordance with pre-established arrangements
The distress communication and silence conditions shall be terminated by transmitting a messageincluding the words “DISTRESS TRAFFIC ENDED”, on the
frequency or frequencies being used for the distress traffic
This message shall be originated only by the station controlling the communications when, after the reception of the message prescribed above, it is authorized
to do so by the appropriate authority
