Automatic Terminal Information Service (ATIS)
To improve controller effectiveness and to reduce tower and ground frequency congestion, an ATIS is pre-recorded and broadcast at busy airports.
The ATIS play on a continuous loop. It is usually renewed every hour or whenever an official weather is received.
The ATIS contains basic weather information, runway in use, communication procedures and NOTAMs.
The pilot is expected to listen to the ATIS recording (prior to contacting "ground control" before start-up or "approach control" during arrival).
Each ATIS recording is assigned a letter of the phonetic alphabet. For example: The ATIS broadcast for I 1:00AM might be assigned the letter "D", pronounced"
delta" according to the ICAO phonetic alphabet. The next broadcast would be designated"E" ("echo") and so forth.
Pilots should notify air traffic controllers that they received the ATIS broadcast by repeating the broadcast's letter designated on the initial call.
ATIS is broadcast on VHF frequencies. The ATIS frequency for a particular airport is printed on navigation charts and in the airport/facility directory.

Vancouver International information Bravo, weather at one three five five Zulu. Wind three zero zero at eight, visibility five. Five hundred scattered, one thousand two hundred few, ceiling three thousand overcast, temperature one five, dew-point eight. Altimeter two niner eight seven. IFR approach is ILS or visual, runway two six left and runway two six right. Simultaneous parallel ILS approaches in use. Departures, runway two six left. GPS approaches available. VFR aircraft say direction of flight. All aircraft read back all hold short instructions. Advise controller on initial contact that you have Bravo
This translates to
Vancouver International Airport, the information Bravo is issued at 13:55 UTC. The winds are from 300 (~northwest) at 8 Knots. Five statute miles visibility. At
500 feet there are scattered clouds, at 1,200 there are few clouds, at 3,000 feet there is an overcast flight ceiling. The temperature is 15°C (some airports don't
include this due to variability). The dew point is 8°C. The altimeter setting is 29.87 inches of mercury (however this could also be expressed in millibars or
hectopascals.) Visual and simultaneous ILS landings available using Instrument Flight Rules, using runways 26L and 26R, while departures may use runway 26L.
You can conduct an approach via a GPS system. When you first contact air traffic control, inform them your direction of flight if you are using Visual Flight Rules.
Any "hold short" instructions the controller gives you need to be read back to the controller to confirm you have received them properly. Finally, inform the
controller that you have information Bravo (i.e. this information)

VOLMET, or meteorological information for aircraft in flight, is the term applied to a worldwide network of radio stations that broadcast TAF, SIGMET and METAR reports on shortwave frequencies. In some countries, VOLMET stations broadcast on VHF frequencies too. Reports are sent using automated voice transmissions, in the upper sideband or J3E mode. As the name suggests, pilots on international air routes, such as North Atlantic Tracks, use these transmissions to determine what maneuvers to make to avoid severe storms or turbulence, as well as which procedures to use for descent, approach, and landing, such as a visual approach versus an instrument approach and the correct arrival procedure
The VOLMET network divides the world into specific regions, and individual VOLMET stations in each region broadcast weather reports for specific groups of air terminals in their region at specific times, coordinating their transmission schedules so as not to interfere with one another. Schedules are determined in intervals of five minutes, with one VOLMET station in each region broadcasting reports for a fixed list of cities in each interval. These schedules repeat every hour
