ADF– & RMI–Interpretation are the same
The more sophisticated instrument is the RMI where one bearing indicator points to the VOR and the other one to the NDB. It uses a 360° azimuth dial,
which being slaved to the DG, rotates as the airplane turns and therefore shows the magnetic heading on the top of the instruments.
The term RMI is also applied to instruments equipped with only one ADF needle where the compass rose turns like the DG.
The advantage of both instruments is obvious: a 360° image around the station
Reading and visualizing ADF and RMI accurately you will
never again have to deal with interception
never again confuse right and left on the ADF
always know if the wind drifts you towards or away from the required course
♦ always know where the next radio beacon is located and therefore determine the airplane’s position in relation to the airport
Those advantages are worth while applying the following methods consequently
Always apply the following principles
the station is positioned in the center of the needle
the airplane is always positioned at the end of the needle
the airplane always flies straight forward
♦ the distances between the center of the needle and the end of the needle indicates the distance of the airplane to the station
The STATION is in the center of the needle
(bearing pointer)
Although the airplane symbol is always shown in the center of the indicator, the airplane itself is never located there! The airplane symbol shows the heading of the airplane regardless of the airplanes actual position
Therefore: the station is situated in the center of the needle, where the airplane symbol is shown
The actual position of the plane is always at the end of the needle.
How to visualize the spartial overview on the instrument
Big blue circle
The position of the aircraft in relation to the station is obvious
The aircraft is 240° away from the station
The station is located left behind the airplane
Small blue circle
Mentally transfer the station to the center of the needle
Move the airplane from the center of the instrument to the needle end
Maintain the direction of the airplane symbol
This way the situation in the small circle is absolutely identical with the sitiuation shown in the big circle
The instrument together with the airplane and the station has been turned.
The heading is now on the top.
The airplane flies straight forward.
The instrument of the airplane is enlarged.
The station is transferred to the center of the needle.
The airplane is moved to the needle end.
